Rajasthan Fort & Palaces Tour
Six massive forts. Four royal cities. Eight days through the desert state where Rajput warriors carved kingdoms into sandstone cliffs and their descendants still live in the palaces they left behind. This Rajasthan India Fort & Palaces Tour takes you inside the walls that have witnessed 800 years of battles, coronations, and love stories that rival the Taj Mahal itself.
Rajasthan isn’t a destination you casually “see.” The distances are vast. The history is layered. The logistics particularly between Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and Chittorgar demand careful planning. That’s exactly why Trip to Taj Mahal designed this private, 8-day itinerary: so you experience the grandeur without a single moment of confusion, tourist trap anxiety, or wasted time.
Over 3,200 international travellers have completed this route with us. Couples on honeymoon. History enthusiasts tracing Mughal Rajput conflicts. Photographers chasing golden hour light on 500 year old ramparts. What unites them all: the moment they step inside Mehrangarh Fort or watch sunset from a Lake Palace rooftop, they understand why Rajasthan is called the Land of Kings.
This is the most complete Rajasthan fort tour available and every detail below proves it.
Rajasthan Fort & Palaces Tour
Every drive, every fort, every meal stop planned through years of running this exact route. Here’s what each day looks like.
Your driver meets you at Jaipur Airport or Railway Station with a name board and a cold bottle of water. The ride to your heritage hotel takes 20 30 minutes, and the rest of the day is yours to recover from travel.
If you arrive before noon, your coordinator can arrange an optional evening visit to Nahargarh Fort, perched on the Aravalli Hills above the city. The sunset view over Jaipur's pink washed skyline from here is, frankly, staggering and far less crowded than the daytime tourist circuit.
Overnight: Heritage hotel in Jaipur (Samode Haveli, Jai Mahal Palace, or similar)
This is the day most guests call unforgettable. You begin at Amber Fort a sprawling hilltop fortress of honey coloured sandstone and white marble where Rajput kings held court for 200 years. The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) inside is worth the entire trip. Thousands of tiny mirrors embedded in the walls catch a single candle flame and scatter light like stars.
After Amber Fort, your guide walks you through Jaipur City Palace, still partially occupied by the royal family, and Hawa Mahal the five-storey "Palace of Winds" with 953 carved sandstone windows. A brief stop at Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century astronomical observatory, rounds out the morning.
Afternoon is free for shopping in Jaipur's famous bazaars or relaxing at your hotel.
Driving: Minimal within Jaipur. All sites within 15 20 minutes of each other.
After breakfast, you drive approximately 5.5 hours (330 km) to Jodhpur through the Aravalli range. The landscape shifts from pink city to rolling hills to open desert — the transition is dramatic and beautiful.
Upon arrival, you visit Mehrangarh Fort, which National Geographic once named one of the most impressive forts on Earth. It rises 125 metres above Jodhpur on a sheer cliff face. Inside: ornate royal chambers, a weapons gallery with swords that look ceremonial but were built to kill, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the entire blue-painted old city.
Adjacent to the fort sits Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial with views that many of our guests describe as the most photogenic spot in Rajasthan.
Overnight: Boutique hotel in Jodhpur (Raas Jodhpur, Umaid Bhawan, or similar)
The drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur covers 260 km (approximately 5 hours) through the heart of the Rajasthani countryside. En route, you stop at Ranakpur Jain Temple a 15th-century marble temple with 1,444 individually carved pillars, no two alike. It's one of India's most exquisite pieces of architecture and a highlight most competitors skip entirely.
You arrive in Udaipur by late afternoon. The first glimpse of Lake Pichola with the white City Palace reflected on its surface is the moment most travellers reach for their camera and don't put it down until dark.
Overnight: Lakeside hotel in Udaipur (Taj Lake Palace, Leela Palace, or similar)
Udaipur deserves a full, unhurried day. Your guide begins at City Palace Udaipur the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, a layered maze of courtyards, towers, terraces, and rooms with inlaid mirror work that rivals Amber Fort.
After the palace, you visit Jagdish Temple, the 17th century carved marvel in the old city centre, followed by a boat cruise on Lake Pichola. The boat passes the iconic Jag Mandir island palace the inspiration for the Taj Mahal, according to local historians who'll argue the point with great passion.
For couples, this day often becomes the emotional peak of the tour. The light on the lake at sunset, the palace walls glowing amber, the sound of temple bells across the water. It stays with you.
Overnight: Udaipur
This is the longest drive of the tour 530 km, approximately 8-9 hours and we schedule it with two scenic stops and a proper lunch halt to break the journey comfortably.
The destination makes every kilometre worthwhile. Jaisalmer Fort is unlike any other fort in Rajasthan or India. It's a living fort. Roughly 3,000 people still live inside its 12th-century walls, running shops, restaurants, and guesthouses amid 850-year-old Rajput architecture. Walking through its narrow lanes at dusk feels like stepping into a different century.
Optional evening: a Thar Desert camel safari with sunset over the sand dunes of Sam. If you've never watched the sun drop below a desert horizon, this is your moment. Overnight desert camping can also be arranged.
Overnight: Heritage haveli in Jaisalmer (Suryagarh, Hotel Nachana Haveli, or similar)
Morning exploration of Jaisalmer's Patwon Ki Haveli a cluster of five intricately carved sandstone mansions before departing for Chittorgarh Fort (approximately 560 km, 8-9 hours with stops).
Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India by area 700 acres of ramparts, temples, towers, and reservoirs that once protected a kingdom willing to die rather than surrender. The Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) stands 37 metres tall, carved with Hindu deities across nine storeys. The Rani Padmini Palace, surrounded by water, is where legend says a Mughal emperor's obsession with a queen's beauty launched one of history's most devastating sieges.
This fort is raw. Less polished than Amber or Mehrangarh. More emotionally powerful because of it.
Overnight: Chittorgarh or return drive to Udaipur (based on preference)
After breakfast, your driver transfers you to Udaipur Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey. Departure timing is flexible early morning or midday, whatever suits your flight.
If your departure is afternoon, we can arrange a morning visit to Sajjangarh Palace (Monsoon Palace) on a hilltop overlooking Udaipur's lake system a perfect, quiet farewell to Rajasthan.
Over 3,200 guests from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe have trusted us to navigate Rajasthan’s forts and highways on their behalf. Here’s what sets us apart:
We specialize in Rajasthan. We don’t sell 500 generic India tours. Our entire team lives in Rajasthan, knows every fort gatekeeper by name, and has driven every kilometre of this route dozens of times. That local knowledge translates into priority access, better restaurants, and the hidden viewpoints no guidebook mentions.
Our guides are historians, not script-readers. Every guide holds an Archaeological Survey of India license with a minimum of 7 years’ experience. They don’t recite Wikipedia entries. They tell the stories behind the stones the battles, the betrayals, the love affairs that shaped these walls.
We’ve eliminated every pain point international tourists face. Worried about being overcharged at a market? Your coordinator advises fair prices before you shop. Nervous about food safety? Every restaurant on our route is vetted and reviewed. Concerned about aggressive touts at fort entrances? Your guide handles everything you walk past the chaos, not through it.
Our reviews speak loudly. We maintain a 4.8-star average across Google and TripAdvisor with 900+ verified reviews. Phrases like “best decision of our India trip” and “worth every dollar” appear repeatedly. We’ve earned that trust one tour at a time.
Private means private. No strangers in your vehicle. No group schedule dictating your pace. Stop where you want, stay longer where it moves you, skip what doesn’t interest you. This is your Rajasthan.
We’ve guided thousands of international visitors through Rajasthan. These are the tips that make the biggest difference.
October through March is peak season and for excellent reason. Daytime temperatures range from 20 – 28°C (68 – 82°F), skies are reliably clear, and the desert light is ideal for photography. December and January mornings can be cool (8 -12°C / 46 – 54°F), so pack a jacket.
April through June brings intense heat 40°C+ (104°F+) in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. Forts are less crowded, but outdoor exploration becomes physically demanding. We advise against this window unless you’re highly heat-tolerant.
July through September is monsoon season. Udaipur’s lakes fill dramatically, the landscape turns green, and Chittorgarh Fort looks magnificent against storm clouds. Expect occasional rain delays. We run tours year-round and advise honestly about conditions for your dates.
Our recommended duration is 8 days / 7 nights, which covers Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and Chittorgarh without feeling rushed. Shorter 5-6 day versions are possible if you focus on the "Golden Triangle" forts (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur). We can also extend to 10–12 days to include Pushkar, Bikaner, Mount Abu, or a Delhi-Agra addition.
Based on historical significance, visual impact, and visitor experience, our top picks are: Amber Fort (Jaipur) for sheer beauty, Mehrangarh Fort (Jodhpur) for dramatic scale, Jaisalmer Fort for its living heritage, Chittorgarh Fort for raw emotional power, and Kumbhalgarh Fort for its 36-km wall the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China. This tour covers four of the five. Kumbhalgarh can be added as a Day 4 stop between Jodhpur and Udaipur.
Yes. Rajasthan is one of India's safest and most tourism friendly states, with well developed infrastructure for international visitors. Tourist police are present at all major forts and cities. Our guests including solo female travellers and couples consistently report feeling safe, welcomed, and well looked after. Your private driver and guide provide an additional layer of security and local navigation throughout the trip.
Absolutely. Every Rajasthan fort and palaces tour we operate is private and fully customizable. Want to skip Jaisalmer and spend an extra day in Udaipur? Done. Prefer luxury tent camping in the Thar Desert? We arrange it. Need a wheelchair accessible itinerary? We've done it before and can plan accordingly. Send us your preferences and we'll build your ideal route.
October through March offers the ideal combination of comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and excellent light for photography. Within that window, November and February are the sweet spot warm days, cool evenings, and manageable tourist volumes. December and January can be chilly at dawn, but forts are at their most atmospheric with morning mist on the ramparts.
Yes it's one of our most popular add-ons. We offer a same day Agra tour from Jaipur (or an overnight Agra extension) that includes sunrise or daytime entry to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Baby Taj. Most guests add it as a pre-tour day before arriving in Jaipur or as a post-tour extension after departing Udaipur via Delhi. Ask your coordinator for details.
Booking for Royal rajasthan tour packages Peak season (October March) is when Rajasthan shines brightest and it’s also when our tours book fastest. Heritage hotels in Jaipur and Udaipur frequently sell out 3-4 weeks in advance during November, December, and February.
